AI-assisted Intelligence Targeting and Weapons Development

2 posts · Jun 2025 – Sep 2026

What this trail covers

Anthropic is developing and evaluating AI capabilities for intelligence targeting and conventional weapons development. This includes creating new evaluations to measure AI performance in tasks like correlating accounts, classifying individuals, and geolocating targets from images and text. The research shows that frontier models are approaching or exceeding human-level performance in some of these areas, raising concerns about potential misuse by threat actors. The company is also implementing AI Safety Level 3 (ASL-3) protections to prevent models from assisting with certain tasks related to chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) weapons development. Recent work has focused on biological risks (biorisk), evaluating AI's ability to assist in planning hypothetical bioweapons acquisition and conducting wet lab uplift trials to assess AI's impact on laboratory biology tasks. This demonstrates Claude's ability to significantly reduce the time and computational expertise required for complex scientific tas
