Anthropic is researching and publishing findings on LLM data poisoning attacks, demonstrating that a small, fixed number of malicious documents can backdoor models of any size. This research highlights the practical feasibility of such attacks and the need for robust defenses against data poisoning, regardless of model scale or training data volume. The work explores denial-of-service backdoors and their effectiveness across various model sizes, emphasizing the importance of absolute document count over percentage of training data for attack feasibility. This post details a joint study with the UK AI Security Institute and the Alan Turing Institute, finding that as few as 250 malicious documents can produce a backdoor vulnerability in LLMs ranging from 600M to 13B parameters, challenging the assumption that attackers need to control a percentage of training data.
