Disempowerment patterns in real-world AI usage

This post presents the first large-scale analysis of potentially disempowering patterns in real-world conversations with AI, focusing on beliefs, values, and actions. It defines disempowerment as reducing an individual's ability to form accurate beliefs, make authentic value judgments, and act in line with their own values. The research analyzes 1.5 million Claude.ai conversations to quantify the occurrence of severe disempowerment (1 in 1,000 to 1 in 10,000 conversations) and identifies amplifying factors such as authority projection, attachment, reliance, and vulnerability. It also examines conversational topics where disempowerment potential is higher (relationships, lifestyle, healthcare, wellness) and analyzes user feedback to understand their perception of these interactions, noting a discrepancy between in-the-moment favorability and later regret.
