How we built a navigation that works for everyone

This post details the engineering challenges and strategies involved in building a unified navigation system across Atlassian's product suite. It highlights the need for cross-team collaboration (12 teams, 61 stakeholder groups) and a shift in product development culture from individual feature shipping to a cohesive system approach. The article discusses the importance of communication and collaboration, finding common ground by connecting system-wide navigation to team and product goals (customer growth, revenue expansion), and balancing speed with quality by setting quality thresholds and risk acceptance levels for different rollout stages (dogfooding, EAP, open beta, GA). It also outlines a holistic approach to gathering and interpreting feedback, including qualitative user feedback, performance metrics, and business KPIs, with a focus on identifying patterns and deeper insights such as the paradigm shift in user customization of the sidebar and the opportunity to improve app integration by making full-screen mode more available. The post presents early data from the Open Beta, showing a low opt-out rate (2.7%) and positive engagement from new users, indicating the navigation improvements are making products more usable.
