This post details the technical observation and analysis of the Syrian internet outage on November 29, 2012. It explains how BGP routes to Syrian IP space (AS29386) were simultaneously withdrawn from all upstream providers (PCCW, Turk Telekom, Telecom Italia, TATA), effectively disconnecting the country. The analysis suggests this was a deliberate configuration update rather than a physical cable cut, based on the systematic withdrawal of routes and the fact that all four physical connections would have needed to be cut simultaneously. A video created with BGPlay visualizes the route withdrawal process.
