This post introduces Unimog, Cloudflare's internal Layer 4 Load Balancer (L4LB) designed for edge data centers. Unimog addresses limitations in existing load balancing solutions by running on general-purpose servers, performing dynamic load balancing based on real-time server load measurements, supporting long-lived connections, managing virtual IP addresses as ranges, and integrating tightly with DDoS mitigation using XDP. It improves load distribution uniformity across diverse server hardware within data centers.
