What this trail covers

Cloudflare has developed and open-sourced lua-capnproto, a high-performance serialization library for Lua, leveraging the Cap'n Proto protocol. This library enables efficient data transfer between programs and across data centers, offering significant performance gains over JSON and Protocol Buffers. The project aims to improve serialization speed and reduce network bandwidth usage for Lua-based services.

  1. Introducing lua-capnproto: better serialization in LuaThis post introduces lua-capnproto, a new open-source Lua module for Cap'n Proto serialization. It details the installation process, provides an example Cap'n Proto definition, explains data preparation rules for Lua, and demonstrates serialization and deserialization. Performance benchmarks comparing lua-capnproto to lua-cjson are included, highlighting its speed advantages. The project is presented as a production-ready solution with plans for future stability and feature enhancements.
