Cloudflare has introduced 'Traffic Sequence,' a dashboard illustration that provides a high-level overview of how Cloudflare products interact during an HTTP request lifecycle. This feature aims to clarify the order of execution for various products, such as Firewall Rules, Workers, and Transform Rules, which has become increasingly complex with the introduction of new functionalities. Traffic Sequence is enabled by default for all zones and highlights the currently configured product area within the dashboard. Future aspirations include developing a more detailed, traceroute-like feature to show the exact path and transformations applied to user traffic.

Traffic Sequence: Which Product Runs First?

10/20/2021

This post introduces 'Traffic Sequence,' a new dashboard feature that visualizes the order of execution for Cloudflare products during an HTTP request. It addresses the growing complexity of traffic flow due to new product releases and aims to improve customer understanding and configuration accuracy. The feature was developed from an internal need to clarify product interdependencies, evolved through internal feedback and user testing, and is now enabled by default for all customer zones. The post details the problem of understanding product order, provides an example of how it impacts configuration (Transform Rules vs. Firewall Rules), and outlines the design considerations and future aspirations for the feature.
