GitLab Act 2

This post announces a significant strategic shift at GitLab towards an 'agentic era' driven by AI. It details operational restructuring, including flattening the organization, creating smaller R&D teams, and rewiring internal processes with AI agents. Architecturally, GitLab is undertaking a generational rebuild of its infrastructure to handle machine-scale work, re-engineering Git for machine scale with API-first services, and building agent-specific APIs. An orchestration service is being reimagined to coordinate agents across the full lifecycle. Context is being invested in as a first-class, API-accessible service. Governance is being built into the core platform. The platform will operate across human-owned, agent-assisted, and agent-autonomous work modes. The business model is evolving to include consumption pricing for agent work. New operating principles are Speed with Quality, Ownership Mindset, and Customer Outcomes.
