Prometheus and GitLab

This post outlines the initial vision for integrating Prometheus into GitLab for monitoring both GitLab installations and end-user applications. It details an MVP to bundle Prometheus with GitLab CE for instance monitoring, and a future direction for web application monitoring (throughput, latency, errors, CPU, memory, I/O) initially focused on Kubernetes. It also introduces concepts for integrating monitoring alerts directly into merge requests and a mockup for a monitoring dashboard, as well as 'deploy monitoring' to track the states of deployments across multiple containers.
