Database Timeout Handling

Grab has evolved its understanding and debugging of database connection timeouts in Rails applications. This post details the investigation into production outages caused by database failovers and the subsequent analysis of ActiveRecord connection pooling, checkout_timeout, connect_timeout, and read_timeout configurations. Experiments were conducted using Toxiproxy to simulate network issues and understand how these timeouts affect application behavior and thread availability. The findings highlight the importance of correctly configuring these timeouts to prevent application slowdowns and ensure resilience during database disruptions.
