Trading UI Design System

1 post · Jan 2023

What this trail covers

HRT has developed a comprehensive design system for its internal trading UIs, focusing on user-centered design principles, tailored controls, visual consistency, and continuous feedback incorporation. This system aims to improve the efficiency and usability of tools used for monitoring trading performance, interacting with automated systems, and participating in manual trading operations. The Task Watcher tool is presented as a case study, demonstrating how user research, card sorting, and task analysis were used to redesign the UI for better usability and to establish a design system with consistent visual language and tailored controls. The system has been iterated on based on user feedback.

  1. Optimizing UX/UI Design for Trading at HRTThis post details the application of user-centered design principles to the Task Watcher tool, a system for monitoring distributed computations. It describes the process of understanding user goals (monitoring activities, finding errors, debugging) through interviews and card sorting, leading to a redesign that simplifies navigation and highlights key information. The post also discusses the implementation of tailored controls for faster actions, such as a visual display of task runtimes with outlier highlighting, and the establishment of a design system with a dark theme and consistent color choices for readability. Continuous user feedback was incorporated to iterate on the design, including the removal of a progress bar feature that was not universally applicable.
