What this trail covers

The IBM z16 mainframe system features the new IBM Telum processor with integrated AI acceleration, supporting up to 40TB of memory and 200 processors. It includes a Crypto Express8S adapter for quantum-safe cryptography and can fit in a 19" rack space.

All IBM trails
  1. A tour inside the IBM z16This post provides a photo-driven tour of the IBM z16, detailing its physical configurations (single-frame to 4-frame wide), internal capacity (up to 200 processors and 40TB memory per system), the IBM Telum processor (8 cores, 5.2 GHz, 32MB L2 cache per core, 1.5x cache capacity vs. z15), and its integrated AI Accelerator (over 6 TFLOPs per chip, 200 TFLOPs in a 32-chip system). It also highlights the Crypto Express8S adapter for quantum-safe cryptography and mentions the potential for leveraging ONNX models on IBM zSystems.
  2. Take a tour of the IBM z15 system, including details and photos of the machine's key components. This post details the IBM z15 mainframe, highlighting its new 19" rack form factor, scalability from one to four frames, and internal components. It specifies up to 190 processors, 40TB of RAM, and 60 PCIe control units in a fully loaded configuration. Key components discussed include the Single Chip Module with 12 cores and on-chip compression/encryption, the Central Processor Complex (CPC) drawers housing processors and memory, and the Crypto Express7S cryptographic accelerator card. The post also contrasts air-cooled and water-cooled options and mentions the massive heatsink.
