This post details the engineering work to reduce capacity buffers by applying statistical modeling, specifically the newsvendor problem, to better balance hardware efficiency and reliability in a private cloud environment. The approach involves high-fidelity demand signals, strategic aggregation, quantifying organic variability, leveraging resource fungibility, navigating lead-time volatility, and anchoring to service SLAs. This methodology was successfully applied to the Stream-Processing platform, decreasing its buffer by ~8.5% and establishing a scalable methodology for the entire Infrastructure ecosystem.
