How We Built a Smarter Pickup Experience for Gated Communities

Lyft enhanced its gated community pickup experience by developing a gate area shape generation algorithm for map data, introducing 'gates mode' to the rider app that offers pickup spot options inside or outside the gate, and surfacing historical ride patterns to suggest preferred gate-adjacent pickup locations. The routing system was updated to include the gate as an intermediate stop. A new UI was implemented for riders to share gate access information (codes and instructions) conversationally and at the right time, with privacy controls for data protection. Drivers receive gate instructions as a scannable banner during navigation.
