Configuration Management and Overrides

Meta's configuration management systems have evolved from ZooKeeper-based solutions to a new peer-to-peer system called Location-Aware Distribution (LAD). LAD addresses the limitations of ZooKeeper, such as bottlenecks caused by strict ordering guarantees and thundering herds, by separating data storage from distribution and employing a tree-based distribution model. This allows for larger updates, increased subscriber capacity, and reduced latency, enabling more efficient configuration management for millions of servers. The system is being deployed for configuration management and evaluated for other large-scale content distribution applications.
