Meta's Federation Platform and Privacy Waves program provide a scalable, structured approach to managing compliance-related tasks, including privacy, security, and accessibility. The platform breaks down initiatives into manageable workstreams, distributing tasks to appropriate teams and enabling progress tracking. Privacy Waves organizes these tasks into monthly batches for predictable cadence, improved quality, and accountability. This system manages over 100,000 tasks annually, saving significant engineering effort. Policy Zones extends this by enforcing purpose limitations on data, especially in large-scale batch processing systems, integrating with exabyte-scale data warehouses and stream processing systems to perform trillions of user consent checks per hour. It uses runtime enforcement and SQL parsing to propagate and enforce privacy annotations across millions of daily data flows, ensuring downstream data restrictions are at least as restrictive as upstream sources. The Policy Zone Manager (PZM) and Governable Data Annotations (GDAs) provide fine-grained information flow tracking and governance, allowing for reclassification of sensitive data labels when transformed and precise controls over annotation lifecycles.
