Facebook and NYU School of Medicine launch research collaboration to improve MRI

This post details a research collaboration between Facebook AI Research (FAIR) and NYU School of Medicine to investigate the use of AI for accelerating MRI scans. The project, named fastMRI, aims to train neural networks to reconstruct high-quality MRI images from less collected data, potentially reducing scan times by up to 10 times. The collaboration leverages FAIR's deep learning and large-scale computing expertise with NYU's imaging science expertise. A dataset of 10,000 clinical cases (approx. 3 million images) from NYU, stripped of patient information, will be used. The project plans to open-source AI models, baselines, and evaluation metrics, while NYU will open-source the image dataset.
