Introducing “Wedge” and “FBOSS,” the next steps toward a disaggregated network

Introduced "Wedge," a new disaggregated top-of-rack network switch hardware design, and "FBOSS," a new Linux-based operating system for network switches. Wedge leverages a modular microserver architecture similar to existing server designs, allowing for flexibility in processor choice (Intel, AMD, ARM) and integration into distributed fleet management systems. FBOSS aims to accelerate development by leveraging existing server management software, providing a Thrift-based abstraction layer for switch ASIC APIs, and enabling a hybrid control plane for optimized network path selection and resource utilization. This initiative aims to make network operations more akin to server operations, improving visibility, automation, and control.
