Open-sourcing a more precise time appliance

This post details the development and open-sourcing of the Open Compute Time Appliance and the associated Time Card. The Time Card is a PCIe card that integrates a GNSS receiver, a miniaturized atomic clock (MAC), and an FPGA to provide nanosecond-accurate time synchronization. The system utilizes a GPS disciplined oscillator (GPSDO) and a NIC with hardware time stamping to synchronize the physical hardware clock. The Time Card's time engine interpolates time between PPS signals and uses a PI control loop for calibration. The open-source nature of this project aims to provide a more accessible and customizable solution for accurate timekeeping compared to proprietary off-the-shelf devices.
