Optimizing Data Center Energy Usage

Summary
This post details specific improvements implemented in Facebook's data centers to optimize energy usage. These include: 1. Improving airflow distribution through cold aisle containment, skirting around PDUs, and sealing cable cut-outs. 2. Reducing cooling levels by optimizing server fan speed control algorithms and shutting down 15 CRAH units. 3. Raising rack inlet temperatures from 72 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit and chilled water temperatures from 44 to 52 degrees Fahrenheit. These measures resulted in annual savings of almost 2.5 million kWh and a reduction in energy demand by 276 kW.
