Peering automation at Facebook

This post details the development and implementation of an automated system for managing public peering at Facebook. Previously a manual, time-intensive, and error-prone process, the new system allows peers to request peering sessions via a web portal, leveraging PeeringDB OAuth for authentication. The system automates BGP session configuration on Facebook's routers and monitors for session establishment, sending automated reminders to peers. This has resulted in a significant reduction in manual effort (over 8 hours per week) and the automatic setup of over 1,400 public peering sessions. The post recommends leveraging PeeringDB OAuth as an industry standard for public peering automation and discusses future plans to automate private network interconnects (PNIs).
