Teaching machines to see and understand: Advances in AI research

This post details advancements in AI research at Meta, focusing on object detection and memory networks. The object detection system achieves 30% faster segmentation and uses 10x less training data. Memory Networks (MemNets) are enhanced to handle datasets exceeding 100K questions, an order of magnitude larger than previous benchmarks. A Visual Q&A (VQA) system combining MemNets with image recognition is demonstrated. Further research areas include unsupervised and predictive learning, with a system predicting block stacking outcomes with 90% accuracy, and an AI Go player that combines search-based approaches with pattern matching, achieving parity with strong human players. The AI assistant 'M' is introduced as a testbed for integrating these capabilities to handle user requests autonomously.
