Private AI Processing for Messaging

Meta is introducing Private Processing, a confidential computing infrastructure built on Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) to enable AI features for WhatsApp users while preserving message privacy. This system allows AI models to process requests like message summarization and writing suggestions within a secure cloud environment, ensuring that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can access the user's data. Key principles include optionality, transparency, and user control, with a focus on confidential processing, enforceable guarantees, and verifiable transparency. The system employs anonymous credentials, Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP) for routing and load balancing, and Remote Attestation + Transport Layer Security (RA-TLS) for secure session establishment. Threat modeling has been conducted to address potential insider and external threats, with plans to publish components and expand the bug bounty program. This technology aims to deliver AI capabilities with the privacy expected from WhatsApp, ensuring that only the user and their intended recipients can access personal messages.
