Meta's Relay framework has evolved to Relay Modern, a new version designed for improved ease of use, extensibility, and performance, particularly on mobile devices. Key advancements include the adoption of static queries and ahead-of-time optimization for reduced network traffic and faster data fetching, a simplified mutation API for better predictability and performance, and built-in garbage collection for efficient memory management. The framework has been modularized into a compiler, runtime, and client libraries. GraphQL, the underlying query language, was developed to address the limitations of RESTful APIs for mobile data fetching, offering a strongly typed, hierarchical, and version-free approach that mirrors the data shape requested by the client. It powers hundreds of billions of API calls daily and is being open-sourced.
