Meta's efforts in distributing self-contained executables have evolved with XARs, an efficient system for packaging code and data dependencies into single, highly compressed files. This system aims to simplify deployment, improve robustness, and enhance performance for applications across various languages, including Python, Node.js, and Lua. XARs leverage squashfs and FUSE for on-demand mounting and unmounting, offering near-zero overhead and faster start times compared to previous methods like PARs and PEX files.
