Zero-Knowledge Proofs (STARKs)

What this trail covers

Meta has open-sourced Winterfell, a general-purpose STARK prover and verifier written in Rust. Winterfell aims to make zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) accessible to average developers by abstracting away much of the cryptographic complexity. It leverages STARKs, which offer advantages like minimal cryptographic assumptions (requiring only collision-resistant hash functions), transparency (no trusted setup ceremonies), and performance benefits for uniform computations through massive parallelization. The system is highly configurable and allows users to describe computations in an Algebraic Intermediate Representation (AIR). Winterfell is published to crates.io and includes tutorials and examples for usage. Potential applications include blockchain privacy and scalability, as well as other security and privacy applications.
