What we learned during the Custom Agents beta

This post details the transition of Notion's Custom Agents from beta to general availability with usage-based pricing. Key technical learnings include the importance of treating agents as internal products, agent-building becoming an operational skill, and the biggest wins coming from rewiring workflows. Cost efficiency has been improved by introducing lighter-weight models (e.g., Haiku 4.5, GPT-5.4 Mini) and under-the-hood optimizations. Scaling confidently is addressed with new administrative controls like per-agent credit limits, workspace visibility dashboards, proactive alerts, and agent pausing capabilities. The post also clarifies the distinction between the general Notion Agent and Custom Agents, and explains the rationale behind usage-based pricing.
