This feature thread tracks the evolution of federated learning for multimodal AI, focusing on enabling collaborative training of vision-language models (VLMs) and unified multimodal models (UMMs) across distributed data silos. Initial efforts focused on the challenges of orchestrating federated training for VLMs, particularly the large size of model updates and the heterogeneity of data and task mixes across sites. NVIDIA FLARE has been developed to address these challenges by supporting parameter-efficient fine-tuning and automated research loops. Recent advancements introduce AI agents and Auto-FL to automate the research process, enabling faster iteration on FL strategies, ensuring reproducibility through experiment ledgers, and incorporating literature-grounded recovery mechanisms to escape local optima. This evolution aims to accelerate the evaluation of new FL algorithms and model architectures.
