Millions at Stake: How Melange's High-Recall Retrieval Prevents Litigation Collapse

This post details Melange's migration from a self-hosted Milvus cluster to Pinecone due to scaling issues (memory pressure, unreliable uptime, failed index rebuilds) when handling ~450M vectors. Melange required reliable recall at massive scale and minimal engineering work. Pinecone provided high-recall retrieval at scale (hundreds of millions to billions of vectors), predictable query performance, and a serverless design that reduced TCO by eliminating infrastructure maintenance. Stable ingestion via Parquet and high reliability (zero issues reported since migration) were also key benefits, enabling Melange to focus on embedding strategies and model iteration.
