Database Platform Comparison

2 posts · Jul 2023 – Oct 2023

What this trail covers

PlanetScale offers enhanced database platform capabilities with the introduction of Scaler Pro, a new pricing and resource allocation model. This plan provides a combination of CPU, memory, and disk storage, offering more concrete metrics and control compared to traditional serverless models. Scaler Pro databases are configured with high availability features, including replication across three availability zones, semi-synchronous replication for data persistence, and continuous monitoring with automated failover. The pricing is competitive with established DBaaS solutions like Amazon RDS, offering comparable or superior availability and performance at a lower cost. The platform also integrates with tools like PlanetScale Insights and supports non-blocking schema changes.

All PlanetScale trails
  1. PlanetScale vs. Amazon RDSThis post introduces a new capability thread focused on comparing PlanetScale's database platform against major cloud provider offerings like Amazon RDS. It details the architectural differences, scaling mechanisms (Vitess sharding vs. RDS read replicas/instance scaling), performance characteristics, pricing models, operational differences (fully managed vs. semi-managed), and change management approaches (Git-like workflow vs. manual schema changes). It positions PlanetScale as a more scalable, cost-effective, and operationally simpler alternative.
  2. Announcing PlanetScale Scaler ProThis post announces the Scaler Pro plan, which redefines PlanetScale's pricing and resource allocation for databases. It details the architecture of Scaler Pro databases, emphasizing their high availability through multi-AZ deployment, semi-synchronous replication, and automated failover using Orchestrator. A key contribution is the direct comparison of Scaler Pro's features and pricing against Amazon RDS, highlighting PlanetScale's cost-effectiveness and advanced capabilities like non-blocking schema changes and Insights. The post also explains the underlying components of a PlanetScale database, including MySQL instances and Vitess orchestration.
