Sustainability Science in Action: Measuring the Carbon Intensity of a Compute Environment

This post details the initial efforts to measure server-level power consumption by repurposing IPMI APIs to access BMC sensor data (voltage and current) and calculate wattage. It further extends this to containerized solutions on Kubernetes by correlating Kubelet and Prometheus data (CPU/memory utilization) with IPMI readings to attribute power usage to applications running on nodes.
