Reimagining video infrastructure to empower YouTube

Introduced the Video (trans)Coding Unit (VCU), a custom chip and software system designed to significantly improve the efficiency of video transcoding. The VCU achieved 20-33x improvements in compute efficiency over previous software-on-CPU systems. The development involved a vertically integrated team of software and hardware engineers, with extensive simulation and emulation to mitigate risks associated with custom hardware development. Future generations will incorporate AV1 codec support.
