Design NL-to-Formula assistant for Airtable
Problem Description
Design a service that acts as a natural language (NL) to Airtable formula assistant. This service will enable users to describe desired data transformations or column creations in plain English, which will then be converted into executable Airtable formulas and applied to their online sheets.
Scenario
You are provided with an Airtable API key and access to a specific base/table for read/write operations, as well as an LLM API key (e.g., Claude) for natural language processing. Users will input requests such as:
- “add 2 to salary”
- “if status is 'active', set bonus to 10% of salary”
- “create a column that is salary * 1.1”
Your service must perform the following steps:
- Interpret the user's natural language request in conjunction with the target Airtable table's schema.
- Translate the interpreted request into a valid Airtable formula expression or an equivalent data transformation that can be applied to a field or column.
- Apply this transformation to the live Airtable sheet using the Airtable API.
- Provide a clear result back to the user, including details of what was changed, a preview of the impact, and any encountered errors.
Requirements
- Ambiguity Handling: The service must be able to handle ambiguous user requests by asking clarifying questions when necessary.
- Safety: It must prevent destructive or unsafe operations, safeguard against data leakage, and be resilient to prompt injection attacks.
- Reliability: The system needs to validate generated formulas before application, gracefully handle Airtable API errors and rate limits, and support retry mechanisms.
- Observability: The service should incorporate logging, metrics, and tracing to facilitate debugging and performance evaluation.
Deliverables
Your design should cover the following aspects:
- A high-level architecture outlining the main components and their data flow.
- The strategy for prompting the LLM and using tool-calling to effectively translate natural language into Airtable formulas.
- Detailed plans for validation and safety checks to be performed before writing any changes back to Airtable.
- A comprehensive approach to testing and evaluating the quality of the service, both offline (e.g., unit tests, integration tests) and online (e.g., A/B tests, monitoring).
- Identification and mitigation strategies for key edge cases and potential failure modes.
