Implement a ring buffer
Ring Buffer Implementation
Implement a fixed-capacity circular buffer, commonly known as a ring buffer, using an array as the underlying data structure.
Core Functionality
The buffer must support the following operations, each with an O(1) time complexity:
push(element): Adds an element to the buffer.pop(): Removes and returns the oldest element from the buffer.peek(): Returns the oldest element without removing it.isEmpty(): Checks if the buffer is empty.isFull(): Checks if the buffer is full.size(): Returns the current number of elements in the buffer.
Full Buffer Behavior
When attempting to push an element into a full buffer, the implementation must explicitly choose and document one of the following behaviors:
- Overwrite: The oldest element in the buffer is overwritten by the new element.
- Reject: The
pushoperation fails or throws an error, indicating the buffer is full.
The chosen behavior must be fully implemented.
Iteration
Provide a mechanism to iterate over the current elements in the buffer in their logical order (from oldest to newest).
Thread-Safety and Blocking Operations (Discussion)
Discuss how you would extend this implementation to be thread-safe. This extension should include optional blocking push and pop operations, utilizing condition variables for synchronization. Analyze the time and space complexity of all operations, including the thread-safe extensions.
