Explain code complexity and design two games
Interview Prompts
This interview consists of three independent prompts designed to assess your fundamental software engineering skills.
1. Code Comprehension & Complexity
- You will be provided with two short, language-agnostic code snippets.
- For each snippet, explain in plain English what it does.
- Analyze its time complexity and space complexity using Big-O notation. Clearly state any assumptions made regarding input size, data structure costs, or other factors.
2. Object-Oriented Design: Jigsaw Puzzle
Design the core classes and APIs for a jigsaw puzzle application. Your design should account for the following:
- Pieces: Individual puzzle pieces can be rotated.
- Sides: Each piece has four sides that must correctly match adjacent pieces.
- Board Operations: The puzzle board must support placing a piece, removing a piece, and validating the correctness of placements.
- Deliverables: Describe the key classes, their relationships, and important methods. You may include high-level pseudocode to illustrate logic.
3. Object-Oriented Design: 2048 Game
Design the core logic and data model for the 2048 game. Your design must cover:
- Grid: A 4x4 grid of tiles, each with a value (e.g., 2, 4, 8, ...).
- Moves: A move (up, down, left, or right) slides all tiles in that direction and merges equal adjacent tiles. Crucially, tiles can only merge once per move.
- New Tile Spawning: After every valid move, a new tile (typically 2, occasionally 4) must appear in an empty cell.
- Game State: The system must track the current score and detect when the game is over.
- Deliverables: Provide the necessary classes/data structures and outline the algorithm to process a move.

Core dilemma
Demonstrating a broad command of fundamental software engineering principles across distinct problem domains: algorithmic analysis, object-oriented design, and state management in interactive systems. The challenge is to show depth and attention to detail in each area, rather than just a superficial understanding.
