Design an image-to-multilanguage translator
Problem Description
Design a service that allows users to upload an image containing text (e.g., a menu, screenshot, street sign) and receive the same image with the detected text translated into one or more specified target languages.
Requirements
Functional Requirements
- Users must be able to upload an image and select one or more target languages for translation.
- The system must perform Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to detect text within the image and identify its bounding boxes.
- Detected text must be translated into the selected target language(s).
- The system should return:
- A translated image, where the original text is replaced with the translated text rendered back onto the image.
- Optionally, a structured result containing detected text blocks, their bounding boxes, original text, and translated text.
- Support for common image formats (JPG/PNG) is required, and the system must be able to handle large image files.
Non-Functional Requirements
- Low latency for interactive usage (processing a single image).
- Scalability to handle bursts of requests, accommodating batch-like spikes in uploads.
- Reliability, including mechanisms for retries, idempotency, and job tracking.
- Security & Privacy for images, which may contain sensitive content.
- Observability, encompassing metrics, logs, and tracing capabilities.
Deep-Dive Areas
Be prepared to discuss in detail:
- Frontend ↔ backend communication, including authentication, authorization, and request integrity.
- The data model, specifically what tables or documents exist and their purpose.
- Strategies for storing images and derived artifacts (OCR outputs, translations, rendered images).
- Handling multiple target languages per image and caching strategies.

Core dilemma
Balancing the complexity of a multi-stage, compute-intensive pipeline (OCR, translation, image rendering) with strict low-latency requirements for interactive user experience, while ensuring high scalability, reliability, and data privacy.
