Design a client-side comment system
Design a Client-Side Comment System
Problem Description
You are tasked with building a client-side comment system. This system should operate entirely within the browser, with no backend required. The primary focus of this exercise is on data modeling, user interface behavior, and client-side data persistence.
Requirements
- Create and Display Comments:
- Users must be able to add new top-level comments. Each comment requires an
id, an optionalauthor, textcontent, and acreatedAttimestamp. - The system should render a list of these comments.
- Users must be able to add new top-level comments. Each comment requires an
- Filter and Sort Comments:
- Implement functionality to sort comments (e.g., "Newest first" or "Oldest first").
- Implement functionality to filter comments (e.g., by a keyword present in the
textor by a specificauthor). - Sorting and filtering should dynamically apply to the currently rendered list of comments.
- Nested Comments (Replies):
- Comments can have replies, forming a hierarchical tree structure.
- Users must be able to reply to any existing comment.
- Nested comments must also respect the active sort and filter criteria. The specific rules for how sorting/filtering apply to nested comments should be defined by the candidate.
- Persistence with
localStorage:- All comment data must be persisted using
localStoragesuch that comments are restored after a page refresh. - The user's currently selected sort and filter choices (if applicable) must also be persisted and restored.
- All comment data must be persisted using
Constraints & Clarifications
- Assume the system will operate within a single browser tab; multi-user concurrency is not a concern.
- You may choose any UI approach (e.g., vanilla JavaScript, React), but your core design for state management and data persistence should be framework-agnostic.
- You are expected to explain:
- How you would structure the application state.
- How data would be stored in
localStorage. - Your strategy for handling efficient updates to the UI and data.
Deliverables (in interview)
- A detailed data model (including types or JSON structure).
- Key functions/APIs (e.g.,
addComment, replyToComment, setSortOrder, setFilter, loadComments, saveComments). - An explanation of your rendering strategy for nested comments.
- Discussion of edge cases and architectural tradeoffs.

Core dilemma
Managing complex, hierarchical client-side state efficiently, ensuring robust persistence with `localStorage` limitations, and maintaining UI responsiveness for dynamic and nested data without a backend. The central conflict is balancing data structure choices for efficient updates/traversal with `localStorage` constraints and UI rendering performance.
