Solve classic troubleshooting & algorithm tasks
Interview Tasks
This interview consists of several distinct technical tasks designed to assess a candidate's breadth of knowledge across system troubleshooting, low-level programming, concurrency, and large-scale data processing.
Task 1: System Failure Troubleshooting
You are presented with a scenario where a system has failed. Your only access is via SSH to the machine, and the relevant log file is extremely large. Describe your approach to quickly locate the root cause of the problem.
Task 2: Bit Manipulation
Given an integer num and a specific bit position, write code to flip the bit at that position within num.
Task 3: Concurrency Bug Identification and Resolution
You are provided with a snippet of multithreaded code that utilizes locks. Identify the deadlock condition present in the code and propose a fix to resolve it.
Task 4: Top-K Word Frequency Calculation
Given a directory structure that may contain nested sub-directories and numerous files, design a system to count the frequency of all words across all files. The system should then return the top-K most frequent words.
Follow-up Questions:
- How would you handle a scenario where the number of files and their cumulative size is too large to fit into the available memory of a single machine? Discuss potential solutions, specifically considering approaches like MapReduce, Count-Min Sketch, and Space-Saving algorithms.
