Define Product Health and Experiment Design
Product Health Measurement and Experiment Design
As a Product Data Scientist for a large Google consumer product (e.g., YouTube or Google Maps), you are tasked with two primary objectives:
1. Measuring Overall Product Health
Develop a comprehensive framework for measuring the overall health of the product. This involves:
- Brainstorming a Metric Framework: Propose a set of candidate metrics that collectively represent the product's health.
- Tradeoff Analysis: Explain the advantages and disadvantages of each candidate metric within your framework.
- Primary Metric Selection: Choose a single, overarching primary metric that leadership can track over time to gauge the product's success.
- Metric Definitions & Guardrails: Clearly define all proposed metrics and identify essential guardrail metrics to prevent unintended negative consequences from optimizing the primary metric.
2. Designing and Analyzing A/B Tests
Suppose your team launches an A/B test aimed at improving the product. Explain the core experimentation concepts and practical considerations you would employ:
- Core Concepts: Define and explain the relationships between the following statistical concepts: confidence interval, standard error, sample size, significance level (alpha), Type I error, Type II error, power, and variance.
- Practical Risks & Mitigation: Discuss practical risks such as selection bias and novelty effects, and outline strategies for mitigating them.
- Randomization: Explain the importance and implementation of user-level randomization.
- Communication: Describe how you would effectively communicate the results of the A/B test, including its implications, to product leadership.
