Implement compiler for custom language
Design and Implement a Simple Compiler/Interpreter
Goal
Design and implement a small compiler or interpreter for a bespoke toy language, referred to as MiniLang, using your preferred object-oriented programming language. You should explain:
- Your object-oriented design, detailing key classes and their responsibilities.
- The complete compilation pipeline, from source code to execution or code generation.
- Your strategy for systematically detecting and fixing bugs within the compiler/interpreter.
Language Specification and Scope
MiniLang is a small, expression-oriented language with the following features:
- Types: Integers (
int) and Booleans (bool). - Statements:
letfor variable declarations, assignment,printfor output,if/elseconditionals,whileloops, block statements, function definitions, andreturnstatements. - Expressions: Literal values, variables, unary operators (
!,-), binary operators (+,-,*,/,<,>,==,&&,||), and function calls.
Example MiniLang Program:
let x = 2 + 3 * 4;
if (x > 10) {
print(x);
} else {
print(0);
}
Assumptions:
- The implementation language can be any object-oriented language of your choice.
- You may adapt the scope and assumptions as needed, but clearly state any changes.
Deliverables
- A concise description of your object-oriented architecture.
- An outline of the compilation pipeline, including key phases and their invariants.
- Minimal code skeletons or pseudocode for the lexer, parser, Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) representation, and either an interpreter or a bytecode Virtual Machine (VM).
- A comprehensive testing and debugging strategy.

Core dilemma
The central engineering conflict is balancing the complexity of a full compiler pipeline (lexing, parsing, semantic analysis, code generation/interpretation) with the need for a robust, extensible, and correct implementation for a 'toy' language, while making fundamental architectural choices like direct interpretation vs. bytecode VM.
