Design and evolve a reservation system
System Design: Online Reservation Platform
Design a backend platform for booking time-based slots for various services or events, such as appointments, classes, or restaurant tables. Each resource provides time slots, each with a predefined, fixed capacity. The system's core function is to prevent double-booking and overselling capacity, especially under conditions of high concurrency. It must also support the full lifecycle of a reservation (creation, modification, cancellation).
Initially, assume a single geographical region. The system is expected to scale reads (e.g., availability lookups) significantly more than writes (e.g., actual bookings). Payment processing is explicitly out of scope; the primary focus is on ensuring reservation integrity and availability management.
Core Requirements
- Reservation Management: Implement functionality to create, modify, and cancel reservations.
- Concurrency Control: Absolutely prevent double-booking and overselling of capacity for any given time slot.
- API Design: Define external-facing API endpoints, including their request/response structures. Detail an idempotency strategy for all write operations.
- Data Modeling: Design the underlying data model, specifying entities, their relationships, and critical indexes or constraints.
- Consistency & Concurrency Guarantees: Articulate the consistency guarantees for both read and write operations, and detail the chosen approach for concurrency control to prevent double-booking.
- Capacity Management: Incorporate mechanisms for capacity checks, temporary holds on slots, waitlist functionality, and handling Time-To-Live (TTL) or expiration for reservations/holds.
- Architectural Trade-offs: Discuss and justify choices between:
- Optimistic vs. Pessimistic Locking strategies.
- Relational vs. NoSQL database solutions.
- Centralized vs. Sharded inventory management.
- Scalability & Reliability: Address strategies for partitioning data, caching, using message queues, implementing rate limiting and backpressure. Outline approaches for monitoring, alerting, and failure recovery patterns.
- Security & Privacy: Identify key security and privacy risks inherent to such a system and propose mitigation strategies.
- Deployment Strategy: Choose and justify a deployment strategy (e.g., blue/green, canary, rolling updates).
- Product Engineering Principles: Discuss the engineering principles and risks you would prioritize when designing and evolving features and services for this platform.
