Design NL-to-SQL performance optimization assistant
Design an NL-to-SQL Performance Optimization Assistant
You are tasked with building an internal tool for engineers and analysts to ask natural-language questions about database performance. The system should interpret these questions, identify relevant diagnostic data, generate and execute SQL queries safely, analyze the results, and provide actionable optimization recommendations with supporting evidence.
Assume the target database is a relational OLTP system (e.g., PostgreSQL/MySQL) with access to:
- Query statistics (e.g.,
pg_stat_statements-like), slow logs - System metrics (CPU/IO), table/index metadata
- Ability to run read-only SQL and optionally
EXPLAIN (ANALYZE)in controlled environments.
Functional Requirements:
- Translate natural-language questions into structured intents, specifying what to investigate, the time window, and relevant services/tables/queries.
- Generate safe SQL diagnostic queries.
- Execute queries with guardrails such as timeouts, read-only mode, and row limits.
- Analyze query results to produce ranked hypotheses.
- Output optimization recommendations with associated confidence levels and supporting data.
- Handle ambiguous natural-language queries by asking clarifying questions.
Non-Functional Requirements:
- Security: Implement least privilege, tenant isolation, and PII protection.
- Reliability: The system should handle partial data sources and degrade gracefully.
- Latency: Aim for interactive response times, with p95 latency under 5-10 seconds for common questions.
- Auditability: Log user prompts, generated SQL, result summaries, and system decisions.
- Cost Controls: Implement strategies for managing costs if using LLMs, such as caching, batching, and using smaller models.
Deliverables:
Describe the end-to-end system design, including the architecture, main components, data flow, safety mechanisms, and how you would evaluate the quality of the system.
