Design an Event Recommendation Engine
Problem Description: Event Recommendation Engine
Design an email marketing recommendation engine for a ticketing marketplace. The engine's primary function is to identify relevant events for individual users and facilitate the sending of recommendation emails. A critical design consideration is extensibility, as product managers are expected to frequently introduce new recommendation rules.
Requirements
- Data Models: Define fundamental data models for
UserandEvent. - Engine Implementation: Implement an
EmailMarketingEnginethat accepts a collection of recommendation strategies. This engine will then use these strategies to determine which users should receive specific event recommendations. - Core Strategies: Implement at least the following two recommendation strategies:
- Recommend events located in the same city as the user.
- Recommend events with a ticket price below $50.
- Price Service Integration: Assume event prices are not stored directly on the
Eventmodel but are instead retrieved dynamically from a separatePriceService. - Extensibility: The design must facilitate the easy addition of future recommendation strategies, such as those based on location distance, user interests, past purchases, event popularity, or personalized ranking algorithms.
- Strategy Composition: Demonstrate how the engine can be configured to combine multiple strategies, for instance, applying both city-based and price-based recommendations simultaneously.
Discussion Points
Candidates should be prepared to discuss the object-oriented design principles applied, the interfaces defined, the allocation of responsibilities among components, and strategies for testing the proposed solution.

Core dilemma
Balancing a highly extensible, rule-driven recommendation system with efficient processing for potentially large user and event datasets, especially when integrating external, potentially slow services like a PriceService.
