User-centric GitLab Navigation

1 post · Oct 2021

What this trail covers

GitLab is exploring user-centric navigation patterns beyond the traditional project-centric model. This includes developing standalone applications like GitDock to test new ideas and gather learnings for improving the main GitLab start page and other navigation features. The goal is to provide a more personalized and efficient way for users to access relevant information and activities.

  1. Why we built GitDock, our desktop app to navigate your GitLab activitiesThis post introduces GitDock, a new desktop application designed to provide a user-centric navigation experience for GitLab activities. It aggregates information such as recent pipelines, viewed objects, favorite projects, recent comments, and bookmarks into a single menu bar interface. GitDock also provides system notifications for pipeline completion and new to-dos. The application was built as a Minimum Viable Change (MVC) in a separate product to enable faster iteration and testing of new ideas, leveraging local browser history and accepting API optimization trade-offs.
