What this trail covers

Harvey's design system has been rebuilt from the ground up to address product complexity and team scaling. The new system establishes a semantic token architecture, automates token maintenance via the Figma API, and provides a structured approach to component rebuilding and migration. This aims to improve consistency, quality, and development velocity across the organization, with future investments in adapting components for platform-specific constraints (mobile, Office add-ins) and tighter bra

  1. Rebuilding Harvey's Design System From the Ground UpThis post details the rebuild of Harvey's design system, focusing on establishing a semantic token architecture, automating token maintenance via the Figma API, and implementing a phased migration strategy for existing products. Key technical contributions include the development of a GitHub Action for syncing Figma variables to code, the adoption of role-based tokens (e.g., 'foreground-base'), and the implementation of linter rules to enforce adoption of new tokens. Component rebuilding focused on extensibility and quality control, with a new branching workflow. Future work includes adapting components for mobile and Office add-ins, and tighter collaboration between Brand and Product.
