Introduced a new type of optical detector for free-space laser communication that uses plastic optical fibers doped with organic dye molecules. This luminescent detector has a large active area (126 cm²) and a large field of view without sacrificing speed, enabling gigabit per second data rates (demonstrated >2 Gbps) with simpler designs and reduced alignment precision requirements compared to traditional semiconductor photodiodes. This technology aims to provide low-cost, rapidly deployable optical point-to-point links for connecting underserved populations.
