Code Search in Visual Studio Online

5 posts · Feb 2015 – Nov 2016

What this trail covers

Code Search enables users to quickly and easily search across their entire Visual Studio account using their web browser. It supports full-text matching and, for certain languages (like C#, C, C++, and Java), understands code structure to search for specific contexts such as class definitions, comments, properties, etc across all their TFVC and Git Projects. It offers semantic ranking and rich filtering by file path, extension, repo, and project, and code type (definition, comment, reference). It integrates with familiar controls in the Code Hub, giving you the ability to look up History, compare what's changed since the last commit or changeset, and much more. This post announces the general availability of Code Search in Visual Studio Team Services and Team Foundation Server "15", with support for Java and semantic ranking.

All Microsoft trails
  1. Announcing Code Search on Team Foundation Server 2017This post announces the general availability of Code Search on Team Foundation Server 2017. It provides instructions for configuring Code Search during a TFS Server Configuration wizard upgrade, or as a post-upgrade step using a dedicated Search Configuration Wizard. It also recommends installing Code Search on a separate server for larger deployments (over 250 users or >50% CPU utilization on the TFS server) and provides links to documentation for hardware requirements, software dependencies, and separate server installation.
  2. Code Search is now Java friendlyThis post announces the addition of semantic search capabilities for Java files to the Code Search extension for Visual Studio Team Services and Team Foundation Server. It details how Java code type filters (e.g., `class:`, `func:`, `comment:`) can be used to refine search results and improve relevance through semantic ranking, similar to existing support for C#, C, C++, and Visual Basic.
  3. Announcing General Availability for Code SearchAnnounces the general availability of Code Search for Visual Studio Team Services and Team Foundation Server "15". Adds support for Java language understanding, semantic ranking for search results, and the ability to search across multiple projects. Details installation procedures for VSTS and TFS, and highlights features like rich filtering by file path, extension, repo, project, and code type, as well as code collaboration via query URLs and annotations for last change.
  4. Announcing Public Preview for Visual Studio Team Services Code SearchAnnounces the public preview of Code Search in Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS). This feature allows searching across TFVC and Git projects, with full-text matching and semantic understanding of code structure for C#, C, and C++. Key features highlighted include searching across multiple projects, semantic ranking, rich filtering (by file path, extension, repo, project, code type), code collaboration via query URLs and annotations, and integration with version control controls.
  5. Announcing Limited Preview for Visual Studio Online Code SearchAnnounces the limited preview of Code Search for Visual Studio Online, enabling full-text and structural code searching across an entire account via a web browser. Supports C#, C, and C++ with plans for additional languages, and integrates with TFVC and Git projects.
