Robotic Foundation Models

The π0 foundation model continues to evolve, demonstrating enhanced generalist capabilities in physical manipulation tasks. The latest iteration, π*0.6, is trained using Recap (RL with Experience & Corrections via Advantage-conditioned Policies), which combines demonstrations, expert corrections, and autonomous experience. This approach significantly improves robustness and throughput on complex real-world tasks like making espresso drinks, assembling boxes, and folding laundry, enabling practic. The FAST tokenizer has been developed to compress action sequences using the discrete cosine transform (DCT) combined with byte pair encoding (BPE), allowing for more efficient training of autoregressive transformer policies for dexterous robotic tasks. This results in a 10x compression over prior action tokenization approaches and enables training 5x faster than previous models, with policies generalizing to new environments and instructions zero-shot.

Real-Time Action Chunking

The FAST tokenizer continues to evolve, enabling faster training and zero-shot generalization of autoregressive transformer policies for dexterous robotic tasks. The latest iteration, Real-Time Chunking (RTC), allows for real-time execution without discontinuities, significantly speeding up execution time and improving robustness to latency, even with high inference delays. RTC is applied without training-time changes to existing VLA models, and can be adapted to diffusion or flow-based VLAs by posing chunk consistency as an inpainting problem.

Hierarchical Interactive Robot (Hi Robot)

The Hi Robot system introduces a hierarchical inference process for robots, combining a reactive 'System 1' VLA model (π0) with a deliberative 'System 2' VLM. This allows robots to break down complex tasks, process natural language prompts and feedback, and adapt their behavior more effectively, leading to improved instruction-following accuracy and task completion. This iteration enhances the system by training the high-level policy with synthetic data and demonstrating improved performance over GPT-4o and flat VLA policies in tasks like table bussing, sandwich making, and grocery shopping.
