All Shopify trails
  1. Building a Business System Integration and Automation Platform at Shopify - ShopifyThis post details the design and implementation of Shopify's Business System Integration Platform. It outlines the challenges of integrating modular business systems, the limitations of external IPaaS solutions like Mulesoft in Shopify's context, and the decision to build on Shopify's existing tech stack (Ruby on Rails). Key design priorities include minimalism, transparency, flexibility, security, and reusability. Implementation details cover documentation, leveraging Ruby language features and its package ecosystem, using Rails Engines for modularity, eliminating data storage, employing Actions for business logic, and embracing Hashes for data manipulation.
  2. Shopify-Made Patterns in Our Rails Apps - ShopifyThis post introduces 'dev', a command-line developer tool that unifies workflows, automates dependency installation, and standardizes commands across projects, enhancing developer productivity. It also elaborates on Shopify's 'podded architecture' for horizontal scaling of the monolith, where the database is split into subsets of shops, with each pod running independently. This architecture is applied to incoming HTTP requests, background jobs, and asynchronous events, ensuring data isolation per shop. The post also touches upon Domain Driven Design principles within the monolith, emphasizing code splitting into domains while maintaining a common database linked to the Shop, and the use of ActiveRecord migrations for short-term schema changes.
  3. How to Build a Web App with and without Rails Libraries - ShopifyThis post details the foundational concepts of web application development by building a simple birthday tracker ('Mirth') from scratch using only core Ruby libraries. It covers network protocols (TCP/IP), socket creation and management, and the structure of HTTP requests and responses. The second half of the post demonstrates how these concepts are abstracted by Ruby on Rails libraries like Action Controller, Action Dispatch, Active Record, and Action View, highlighting the value and magic of the Rails framework.
